Workshop on ”Networking Free Legal Service Providers”

Addis Ababa University (AAU), Center for Human Rights, organized networking and experience sharing workshop at Ghion Hotel from March 16 – 17, 2020.

The workshop, under the theme of “Networking Free Legal Service Providers”, held with the attendance of representatives from Ethiopian universities.

Wondemagegn Tadesse (PhD), director of Center for Human Rights, in his welcoming address noted that free legal service has to address human right issues in vulnerable sections of the society to avail equal justice.

According to Dr. Wondemagegn, universities on their part through their law schools and Center for Human Right Offices have played vital roles for sustainable equal rights and justice throughout the country since ten years back.

Their activities were exercised, supporting those vulnerable societies by providing free legal services wherever vitally important, Wedndemagegn added.

Dr. Wondemagegn further noted that this networking workshop helps to share experiences, use own resources together and build capacity to provide better legal services.

Ato Belayhun Yirga, director at General Attorney, in his keynote speech stated that the rights of the societies are always safe if there is access to equal justice.

Societies can be effective and have courage to be active participants in both economic and political developments of the country, added Belayhun.

According to Belayhun, there are many organizations delivering free legal service, but most of them are not working in an organized manner.

‘‘The initiation taken by AAU Center for Human Rights to solve this problem and work in collaboration with those parties is appreciable. Our office, General Attorney, is volunteer to support on this part,’’ Belayhun said.

Representatives from Dilla, Assoa, Wollega, Semera and Addis Ababa Universities reflected their experiences and challenges on their free legal services.

After deep and vibrant discussion on the by-Law and MoU regarding the issue, the Universities signed MoU and established a committee to oversee the Network.
