TWO MILLION ATTEND ADULT LITERACY CLASSES IN ETHIOPIA’S AMHARA STATE

BAHIR DAR, ETHIOPIA, March 20 — More than two million adults in Ethiopia’s Amhara State are attending literacy classes, according to the State Education Bureau.

Bureau Adult Education Case Team Co-ordinator Marew Derso said in this state capital that the adults had been attending classes at 19,872 learning centres.

More than 14,000 volunteer teachers have been mobilized to conduct the practice-oriented literacy programme.

In line with the objective of the government to wipe out illiteracy in the State by 2015, more than 71 per cent of the total targeted 9.7 million adults had become literate during the past two years, it was revealed.
