Priorities Need Towards Laying Enabling Env’t for Evolving Democratic Institutions: Prof. Berhanu

Addis Ababa The government, political parties and stakeholders need to strive and prioritize towards laying enabling environment for the evolvement of democratic institutions, Chairman of Patriotic Ginbot 7 Movement, Professor BerhanuNega said.

Professor Berhanu, who was in exile since 2005, was welcomed by thousands of Ethiopians in Addis Ababa stadium.

According to him, every Ethiopian should take the responsibility to safeguard peace and stability, which is crucial to steadfastly ensure the desired democratic institutions.

He added that democracy cannot be attained overnight and collaboration of every citizen is to maintain genuine democracy.

But if we rush to attain democracy overnight, we will certainly lose the glimmering hope of democracy at hand, he added.

He underscored that his movement decided to return back home to engage in a peaceful struggle so as supporting to alleviate the nation, not for competition.

We don't need to strictly stick to the schedule that the government put in place to conduct the next elections, Berhanu said adding that we need a qualified system that can guarantee the execution of democratic elections.

Ethiopia scheduled to hold its next election after two years. Appreciating the ongoing sweeping reform in the country towards democratization, he stressed on the need to have few but vibrant and strong opposition political parties in order to realize genuine democracy.

In this regard, he called upon the different political parties that have related interests, policy direction and ideology to come under a single political umbrella.

Patriotic Ginbot 7 Chairman, Professor BerhanuNega and Secretary AndargachewTsige have arrived in Addis Ababa on Sunday morning leading nearly 300 members of the movement.
