AU, UN Condemn Grenade Attack

Addis Ababa The African Union and United Nations condemned the grenade attack that took place in Addis Ababa on Saturday during a peaceful rally under the banner of peace and reconciliation.

Chairperson of AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat 'strongly condemns this cowardly attack against civilians'.

The Chairperson furthermore expressed AU's solidarity with the people and government of Ethiopia.

He also reiterated AU 'unwavering support to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his Government's remarkable efforts to forge unity, reconciliation, peace and democracy for all Ethiopians'.

Similarly, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the act of violence which led to the death of two and injured dozens.

A statement from the Spokesperson of the Secretary-General said that he conveys his condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.

The UN chief has also expressed his solidarity with the government and people of Ethiopia.

Two persons reportedly died, and dozens were injured after an explosion ripped through a large crowd at a rally in Addis Ababa in support of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's reform agenda on Saturday.
