Ethiopia, Russia Remain Genuine Partners Through Ages : Ministry of Culture and Sport

Ethiopia and Russia have remained genuine partners in successive governments, Ministry of Culture and Sport, Kejela Merdassa said.

Speaking at the Russian musical performance organized by the embassy, in dedication to the National Unity Day, Kejela said the two countries’ relationship has remained cordial before and after the establishment of a formal diplomatic relationship.

During the battle of Adwa in 1896, Russia stood by Ethiopia against the colonial invasion of Italy, he pointed out.

The Minister further stated that in 1935 USSR was one of the only five countries which opposed the Italian occupation of Ethiopia.

According to him, the relationship between the two countries remained vibrant until today, especially in the fields of technology, science, culture, diplomacy and education.

There is much room to further enhance the ties between Ethiopia and Russia in the fields of art and culture, he said.

“We understand the fact that the people of our two countries have excellent knowledge and experience in performing musicals, literary and visual art,” he said.

‘If supported by a clear plan and coordinated initiative, we can exchange the rich and tangible cultural values of the two people’, Kejela said.

Thus, organizing such art performances is the best way to strengthen the people to people ties between Ethiopia and Russia, he noted.

Russia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Evgeny Terekhin, on his part said the musical performance by State Academic Russian Folk Ensemble, a renowned folk group, was held on the occasion of the Russian National Day.

Its aim is to strengthen the comprehensive cooperation between Russia and Africa, the ambassador said.

According to the ambassador, prior to Ethiopia, the cultural group had performed in Zambia and Tanzania.

President Sahle-Work Urges Diplomats to Prioritize Ensuring Nat’l Interest within Dynamic Geopolitics

President Sahle-Work Zewde urged diplomats to prioritize ensuring national interest within the dynamic geopolitical situation.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been providing training in the premises of African Leadership Excellence Academy to diplomats for the last 21 days.

President Sahle-Work Zewde, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen, Former Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn, and Former President Mulatu Teshome (PhD) have shared their experience to the participants of the training.

During the occasion, President Sahle-Work said that national development is achieved through a rally among generations, adding that the training and experience sharing will move the country’s diplomacy a step forward.

Noting that the global geopolitics has been recurrently transforming, the president said “in this context giving the utmost priority to national interest is crucial.”

The global geopolitics is dynamic and it is essential to ascertain national interest, Sahle-Work pointed out and called on diplomats to discharge their due responsibility.

The president appreciated the reform being underway at the ministry of foreign affairs stressing the need to provide the necessary supports to the ongoing efforts carried out to strengthen the diplomatic activities to a higher level.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen said on his part that diplomats, taking into account of the global situation, should work hard to ensure national interest more than any other time.

He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been undertaking a number of reforms to strengthen its diplomatic relationship and the training is part of that.

Demeke pointed out that works are underway to establish a club where senior and junior diplomats can meet and share experience.

Former Prime Minister, Hailemariam Dessalegn stressed that diplomats have the responsibility to sustain national interest in the dynamic global politics.

Ethiopia has diplomats that can safeguard its national interest in the international arena, Hailemariam said, and emphasized the need to further expand.

Former President, Mulatu Teshome (PhD) said on his part that diplomats need to work with patriotism and dedication to ensure national interest.

The diplomats also need to strive to achieve the aspired goal more than any other time, he added.

22nd Edition of Great Ethiopian Run Colorfully Held in Addis Ababa

The 22nd edition of Great Ethiopian Run was held today in Addis Ababa with participation of more than 40,000 people.

President Sahle-Work Zewde, Addis Ababa Mayor, Adanech Abiebie, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Kejela Merdasa and other senior government officials as well guests including renowned Kenyan athletes and tourists attended the 10 killo Meter annual street race held at Meskel Square in the capital.

The Great Ethiopian Run is the first biggest event in Africa and sixth in the world’s international street races.

The Great Ethiopian Run is believed to be one of the most important events to promoting tourism in Ethiopia.

It was indicated that the Great Ethiopian Run has successfully conducted more than 100 races in various cities in the country over the past years.

Ethiopia’s famous long-distance runner, Haile Gebrselassie  founded the race in 2000.

Defense Minister Abraham Reaffirms Government’s Determination for Implementing Peace Agreement

Defense Minister Abraham Belay (PhD) reaffirmed the government’s determination to implement the peace agreement signed between the Ethiopian government and TPLF.

Minister of Defense has recognized and awarded the participants of the peace agreement reached in Pretoria, South Africa, and Nairobi, Kenya representing the government.

The minister said during the occasion that the delegation who participated in the peace process on behalf of the government has made a great contribution to the completion of the peace process in a manner that respects the sovereignty and national interests of Ethiopia.

Hence, they should also be commended as the peace agreement sparked hope to all Ethiopians, especially to citizens who were in the conflict areas, he added.

Expressing the government’s commitment to the effective implementation and sustainability of the peace agreement, the minister pointed out that there are conflict traders who work to disrupt the implementation of the agreement.

The Minister further urged peace spoilers to refrain from their acts.

Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) Chief of General Staff, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula said on his part that the defense force is heroic army that loves its country and puts peace first.

He indicated that the peace agreement reached in South Africa and Kenya was concluded in a manner that respected the territorial integrity of Ethiopia.

“As the peace agreement was conducted well with a common understanding, we are committed to its implementation,” Field Marshal Birhanu said.

Peace Alternative Committee member, Ambassador Hassen Abdelkadir said for his part that Ethiopia remains a peace-loving country and the government has demonstrated this position repeatedly.

Federal Police Reform Helps to Maintain Rule of Law by Respecting Human Rights: OHCHR Representative

Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) regional representative for East Africa, Marcel Akpovo said that the reform works being carried out in the Ethiopian Federal Police will help the nation to ensure rule of law in a manner that respects human rights.

The representative made the remark during his visit to the main department of the federal police in which he commended the reform activities.

He said during the occasion that the general procedures of the Ethiopian Federal Police, including crimes prevention and investigation are supported by technology and respect of human rights based on the procedures that are expected from a police institution.

He also witnessed the fact that in addition to developing data collection supported by technology with a view to safeguarding the public’s safety, the collected data will be presented as crucial evidence to the courts.

On the other hand, he said the technology employed to properly supervise police officers that are deployed to execute missions, will help to easily address problems that might encounter in the course of actions.

“…I have observed that the possibility that offers for the police to be able to oversight on the behavior of the police officers. The technologies that I have seen help a lot to deter abusive behaviors of police officers when they are deployed in the field.”

He stressed the need for the newly employed technologies protect the private rights of citizens urging for the continuation of strengthened procedures that respect human rights.

The procedures developed by the Ethiopian Federal Police are in line with international provisions that a suspect is considered innocent until found guilty in a court of law and that his human rights are protected, he underlined

The procedures developed in the department of criminal investigations, which are crucial part of the justice system, are consistent with the police duties expected in this sector, he added.

He also expressed hope that if the reform works in the police institution continue, Ethiopia will become a center of excellence and an example at the African level.

“If the encouraging reform activities in the federal police continue, I have no doubt that Ethiopia’s Police become one of the best police institutions in Africa.”

The representative has also  affirmed  that High Commission for Human Rights will extend its support  to strengthen the ongoing reforms.

Some 200,000 Hectares of Land Covered with Wheat Seed in Oromia Region, Regional Vice President Says

Some 200,000 hectares of land has been covered with wheat seed as part of the summer irrigation program in Oromia Regional State, Regional Vice President Awolu Abdi disclosed.

The Vice President officially launched the summer irrigation wheat development program in Waqe Miqa kebele of East Shewa Zone, Oromia Regional State.

Though this fiscal year’s wheat irrigation program was launched on Saturday, several places in Oromia Region have begun earlier implementing the program.

On the official launching event, the Vice President said that the regional state has planned to cultivate more than 1 million hectares of land during the current fiscal year, adding the region has so far able to cover 200,000 hectares with wheat crop through summer irrigation program.

Stating that the regional government has been registering encouraging achievements within a short period of time in its summer irrigation wheat cultivation, Awolu said the current positive result demonstrate the fact that the nation will ensure food self-sufficiency.

He also mentioned that tractors, water pumps, soil fertilizers and selected seeds are being provided at the required level in order achieve the plan.

According to him, a lot of activities have been carried out including the effort done to change the work culture with a view to the successfully attain the ongoing campaign against poverty.

East Shewa Zone administrator, Ababu Wako on his part said Works are underway to cultivate 200,000 hectares of land with wheat during the current fiscal year’s summer wheat irrigation program.

The government of Ethiopia is exerting efforts to increase the wheat production of the country by cultivating the crop throughout the year.

For instance, the nation is working to harvest 52 million quintals of wheat during this Ethiopian fiscal year through the summer wheat irrigation program.
