The Odd Man Out?

Salva Kiir, president of South Sudan, looks the other way while heads of states from countries in the region debated and finally agreed to form a regional force of protection and deterrence at the Sheraton Addis on Thursday, March 13, 2014.

Comprising of soldiers from IGAD member countries but Sudan and Uganda, this force will be part of a mechanism designed to monitor and verify the agreement the warring factions in South Sudan have agreed in Addis Abeba back in February 2014.

However, while dialogue is agreed to continue between the warring parties of Kiir and Riek Machar (PhD), head of the rebels, which will include leaders released from detention, President Kier has backtracked from his promise to Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn. He told heads of state met at the Sheraton, his government would not release the remaining four politicians still detained in Juba.
