Magic System to Perform in Addis

Cote d’Ivoire’s renowned band, Magic System, is scheduled to perform at the Tizita International Music and Art Festival on May 3 and 4 at Tropical Gardens.

Even though in Ethiopia many do not know what Magic System is, their song, entitled ‘Premire Gaou’, is one of the hit songs from the 1990’s. Many recite the French lyrics and sing the chorus along with the music.

Organized by Mingle Promotion and Micky Dread Events, the organizers believe the concert will give a chance to introduce to the public what Magic System is. The band has been active since the mid 1990’s and were able to sell millions of songs all over the world.

Their recordings, which featured Zouglou dance style, control the music charts not only in many African countries but also in the West Indies and in France. Throughout the years they have released eight albums. Apart from Magic System, many artists are also lined up for the two-day event. On Saturday, legendary singer Mahmoud Ahmed and Girma Negash, Girma Tefera, Bahta Gebrehiwot, Meta and the Cornerstone, and Fidel Band, will highlight the event.

On the second day the renowned and lively Alemayehu Eshete and Express Band, Lubak Acoustic Band and Sydney Salmon, will perform.

Apart from that, the Senegalese reggae icon Meta and the Cornerstone, and Jamaican reggae singer Ras Goody Brown, are part of the festival.

According to Benyam Zewdie, founder of Mingle Promotion, this is a festival for recent and old memories to be celebrated through music.

The concert is not divided in one genre but rather comprises diversified music to cater to different audiences. “We want to give an alternative type of festival which includes different genres. So anyone who loves music can be part of it,” Benyam said.

Apart from the music at this event, around 25 artists will present their paintings and installation artworks. Benyam wants this to be a festival where different art forms can come together. Like the concept of what was happening in Europe in the late 60’s, which made the audience part of the art making, the event also has a plan to involve the audience in live paintings.

The organizers have a plan to make this event an annual one. The cover charge for the festival is 250 birr.
