Leather Performance Missing Targets

The Ethiopian Leather Industry Development Institute (ELIDI) announced that the country has obtained over 100 million dollars from the export revenue of leather and leather products during the past nine months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year 201314.

“The performance has shown a 12.88 million USD increment when compared to that of the same period last year,” says Berhanu Serjabo, Communications Director of ELIDI.

The plan of the institute is to collect 347 million dollars from the export of leather and leather products for the current fiscal year, but the institute managed to guarantee less than one third of the plan at the end of the third quarter of the current fiscal year.

Lack of raw leather and hide the main inputs of the sector are being blamed for the shortcomings. Currently there are 31 factories operating in the sector. The government expects to earn 500 million dollars from the sector by the end of the GTP which is only a year away.
