Dr Tedros Adhanom Held Discussion With UNISFA Delegation

Foreign Minister Dr. Tedros Adhanom held discussions with a delegation led by Major General Yohannes Gebremeskel Head of Mission and Commander of Force of United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in his offices yesterday(April 25, 2013).

The discussion of the two sides focused on the current situation in Abyei and ways to move forward the political process mediated by the AUHIP. On the occasion member of the delegation representing the UN Country Team expressed appreciation to Ethiopian troops who make up to 90% of the UNISFA in supporting the community in their effort to improve their livelihood.

The delegation briefed Dr. Tedros on challenges faced by UNISFA in discharging its mandate. The delegation stressed on the need to support the AUHIP’s effort to resolve the dispute over Abyei. They also underlined the need for community engagement and resolve disputes through traditional mechanisms.

Foreign Minister, Dr. Tedros for his part underlined the importance in pursing the political process along side with ensuring security within Abyei. He said, Ethiopia as a member of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union and through bilateral forums will support the efforts of AUHIP to mediate Sudan and South Sudan over the issue of Abyei.
